In the film that I want to write, the main characters include a married couple. They both need to be in the story obviously. Also, Sarah's ex boyfriend is essential to the script to show that she had previous relations with someone else so that the end makes sense. Therefore, the child needs to be in the story to provide more conflict between the couple and a way to ultimately come together in the end.
