If I was writing a story set in an earlier time period, I would use different slang and the way that people talked. The setting that I would use would be a rural town that isn't well developed. The characters wouldn't be a mixed minority. Strictly just white or black. Most of the characters wouldn't be well known to reduced the money spent on the film.
